Physical Activity: KVPS Rationale
At Kirkstall Valley Primary, we have a responsibility to help pupils and staff establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity is one of the most important ways people can maintain and improve their physical health, mental health and overall well-being. It is important that pupils are given opportunities to participate in a range of enjoyable physical activities at an early age so they are more likely to continue being physically active throughout the rest of their lives. As a school we aim to meet the national targets of all children engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day, outside of the curriculum, addressing the increasing obesity of children and decreasing levels of physical activity among children. This rationale links closely with our Healthy Schools ethos and Sports Premium spending plan, which is used to further improve, and then sustain, high quality PE and sports provision.
Schools receive PE and Sport Premium Funding based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport offered. The plan below details how we plan to use the premium in this academic year. (Total budget for 2017-18= £14070)
KVPS Physical Activity Aims
·To increase the physical activity levels of all pupils in line with national targets of a minimum of one hour a day.
·To further improve the provision of a supportive environment conducive to the promotion of physical activity.
·To promote the benefits of physical activity to the whole school community and improve pupils’ knowledge, understanding, experience and attitudes towards physical activity.
·To improve the self-esteem, confidence and well-being of the pupils through participation in physical activity, including opportunities to work together.
·To ensure the pupils are aware of the link between physical activity and healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle.
·To promote the celebration of sporting events.
·To promote inclusion.
·To improve the quality and breadth of PE and Sport.
·To contribute to pupils’ good behaviour, physical fitness, growth and development, assisting pupils to meet their fullest potential.
PE
Physical Education is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum and an essential contributor to the development of the whole child. Through a high-quality physical education programme, pupils develop physical competence and confidence and are given opportunities to be physically educated and become physically literate. Through a combination of entitlement and choice of activity, the Physical Education provision will contribute to the personal development, health and well-being, enjoyment, success and achievement of all pupils across the whole curriculum and beyond.
Physical Education provides pupils with the opportunities to be creative, competitive and face up to different challenges, as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy and active lifestyle. Pupils learn how to think in different ways and make decisions in response to creative, competitive and challenging activities. They learn how to reflect on their performance, plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve the quality of their work.
Physical Education helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, officiating and coaching. Through high-quality Physical Education, pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences and make informed choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.
Our swimming teacher has assessed our Year 6 children to see if they meet the National Curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m, using a range of strokes effectively and performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. 86% (25/29) of the children meet these requirements.
School Vision for PE
PE, physical activity and school sport all have a high profile at Kirkstall Valley Primary School and we strongly believe that they contribute to the holistic development of young people and make an active contribution towards many aspects of pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural development. Our high-quality PE curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in both competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It is through these opportunities that pupils become physically confident; they learn that physical activity is fun and is important to lead a healthy lifestyle, as well as having a lifelong commitment to being active and healthy. Our children compete in many competitions, both inter- and intra-school, which build character and embed key values such as teamwork, fairness and respect for themselves as well as others.
